Ludo is a race game for 2 to 4 players. Each player has four tokens, and the first to bring all four home wins. These are the standard Indian rules used by most Ludo apps, including Rummy Ludo.
The board
- A cross-shaped track of 52 squares around the board.
- Four coloured yards (corners) where tokens start.
- A coloured home column of 5 squares for each player, leading to the centre triangle (home).
- Safe squares, marked with a star, plus each colour’s starting square.
Basic rules
- Start: roll a 6 to move a token out of your yard onto your starting square.
- Move: move one token forward clockwise by the number rolled.
- Extra turn: rolling a 6 gives another roll. Three sixes in a row usually forfeits the turn.
- Capture: land exactly on an opponent’s token (not on a safe square) to send it back to its yard. Most apps give an extra roll for a capture.
- Safe squares: tokens on star or starting squares can’t be captured.
- Home column: after a full lap, a token enters its own home column; opponents can’t enter it.
- Exact roll to finish: you need the exact number to reach home. Reaching home usually gives an extra roll.
How to win
The first player to bring all four tokens home wins. In 3- and 4-player games, play often continues for second and third place. Online apps often use shorter formats; see Ludo variations.
Common house-rule differences
| Rule | Common versions |
|---|---|
| Starting roll | 6 only (standard) or 1 or 6 |
| Blocks (two tokens on one square) | Can’t be passed, or ignored |
| Capture bonus | Extra roll, or none |
| Three sixes | Turn forfeited, or allowed |
Always check the rules screen in the app before a cash game, since apps differ.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need a 6 to start in Ludo?
Yes, under standard rules a token leaves the yard only on a roll of 6. Some casual versions also allow a 1.
What happens when you roll three sixes?
In most rule sets three consecutive sixes forfeit the turn, and in some the last token moved goes back.
Can you capture a token on a safe square?
No. Tokens on star squares and starting squares are safe.
Do you need an exact roll to get home?
Yes. A token must land exactly on home; if the roll is too high, move another token or pass.
How many players can play Ludo?
Two to four. Online apps offer 1v1, 3-player and 4-player tables.
